NAPSA VAMPIRE CUP
A critical role within Pharmacy Awareness Chair of NAPSA is to promote a greater health status amongst its pharmacy student members, and the general public. It is only fitting that we should choose to adopt the promotion of blood donation as an initiative.
As of 2010 the NAPSA Vampire Cup initiative will now run under the Pharmacy Awareness Committee. Collaborating with the Australian Red Cross, NAPSA endeavors towards contributing to the greater health of the many severely ill Australians. NAPSA also wishes to promote the worth of blood donation amongst our own pharmacy students and the greater Australian public. It is a worthy cause, with recent statistics showing that one blood donation saves three lives.
The Vampire Cup initiative sets the task of each of NAPSA’s fourteen affiliated branches trying to raise awareness and actively encourage people in the donation of blood. This is in an effort to win the title of ‘Vampire Cup’ which is presented at the NAPSA Congress held annually in January. This challenge allows for any participant to donate blood, plasma or platelets at their local Red Cross Blood Bank between a six week period, which is announced annually by the NAPSA National Council.
The Australian Red Cross Blood Service was official established in 1996 after the humanitarian aid service, the Australian Red Cross, envisaged a need for fundamental blood donations which are, and still remain critically low to this day. With support from the Australian Government, the Australian Red Cross Blood Service is appealing to the national public to actively contribute to this worthy cause.
Blood donations have many uses for the many severely ill patients, with 34% of donations facilitating the cancer and blood disease patients. Other patients that receive donated blood include surgery, burns, obstetric, trauma patients etc. There is a large proportion of people who gratefully receive these donations. Through increased awareness, NAPSA recognize that it is possible to facilitate an avenue whereby Australians can actively contribute towards improving the health of the nation.
