3. Pharmacy Industry Award Assistance

Award modernisation

Throughout the period 2008-2010, the Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC) and its successor, Fair Work Australia (FWA), have undertaken a process of reviewing and rationalising awards in the national workplace relations system to create a system of modern awards.

This process has seen the creation of some 122 industry or occupation based modern awards, which replace more than 1500 awards previously in use.

The Pharmacy Industry Award 2010 (PIA) is one such modern award created through this process.

Shared Industry Assistance Projects

In fulfilling its educative role to ensure compliance with workplace laws, the Fair Work Ombudsman has offered grants under the Shared Industry Assistance Projects (SIAP) program to a number of peak bodies to assist educate employers, particularly those running small businesses, about the transition to modern awards.

The Pharmacy Guild of Australia has accepted a SIAP grant to educate employers in the community pharmacy industry around provisions of and transition to the PIA.

In addition to the tools, resources and information found on the Pharmacy Industry Award assistance website www.guild.org.au\pia, the Fair Work Ombudsman has a range of tools and resources on its website at www.fairwork.gov.au to assist employers and their employees to understand and comply with workplace laws.
